Perth Wholesale Markets plays a vital role in Western Australia’s food supply chain, standing out as a vibrant hub where fresh produce is sourced, traded, and distributed to local businesses. It is from these wholesale markets that both locals and visitors can enjoy the best of what the state has to offer, from seasonal fruits and vegetables to gourmet items and artisan products.
At Perth Markets, we play a vital role in Western Australia’s fresh produce sector, providing an essential link between growers, wholesalers, and local businesses. As the operator of Perth’s primary wholesale market, we play a pivotal role in ensuring a steady supply of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other essential products across the region.
These wholesale markets are a cornerstone for many local businesses, acting as the primary source of fresh ingredients for cafes, restaurants, and specialty stores who rely heavily on the fresh produce available at the market to create seasonal menus and stock their shelves.
The products available in our Central Trading Area come directly from Australian growers and are available for business customers to purchase the next day. This means that the produce served up in local cafes and restaurants is fresher and tastier.
The Role of the Wholesale Market
The wholesale market is the lifeblood of Perth’s fresh food industry. It operates as the go-to marketplace for suppliers and buyers, with more than 100 businesses, including wholesalers, distributors, and agents, working on-site. The market supplies a diverse range of businesses, from independent grocers and supermarkets to restaurants, hotels, and other food service providers.
Operating from early morning hours, the wholesale market facilitates bulk trading of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other perishables. Buyers can source a wide variety of seasonal produce from both local and national growers, as well as exotic fruits imported from trusted suppliers – ensuring year-long availability. By offering a central marketplace, Perth Markets supports businesses in accessing the best available produce at competitive prices, ensuring consumers receive top-quality goods.
Sourcing Locally: A Farm-to-Market Model
Perth Markets are committed to supporting local farmers and producers. Much of the produce sold is sourced from farms across Western Australia, with a focus on seasonal, sustainable goods. By prioritising local sourcing, Perth Markets helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transport, while supporting local agriculture.
Perth’s coastal location means that the markets often include an array of fresh seafood, sourced directly from local fisheries. This wide selection not only caters to the demand for fresh, sustainable food but also helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transport. In addition, Perth’s proximity to fertile farming regions like the Swan Valley and Margaret River means there’s a steady supply of high-quality fruits, vegetables, meat and seafood. This commitment to local sourcing strengthens the relationship between growers and the community while ensuring that Perth’s food supply remains fresh and sustainable
Business to Business in the Central Trading Area
During the week, the Central Trading Area is for registered businesses only which allows the consumer to obtain fresh Australian produce quicker – produce goes from farmer to market to retail in a matter of days.
Saturday Clearance Markets
Saturday mornings are the public’s opportunity to attend the Central Trading Area, Meat Market and Fish Market to purchase fresh produce directly from suppliers. From 6am – 10am, several wholesale produce traders and the meat and seafood wholesalers open their doors, offering their stock at wholesale prices.
This is not your usual farmers market style market – and if you’ve never attended before, it will certainly open your eyes. Buyers at these markets are bargain-driven, and the regulars know what they want and don’t stop for a chat.
The best produce clears out quickly, so we recommend arriving at the Canning Vale Markets early, as this is when you’ll have the best opportunity to pick up some great bargains.
If you haven’t attended the Saturday Clearance Markets before, it is certainly worth heading along – you won’t go home empty-handed!
