Tenants meet demand growth at Perth Markets

Three existing tenants have expanded their operations into a newly constructed cold chain warehouse at Perth Markets Canning Vale.

SJ Fresh, Brindle Group and Select Fresh have chosen the 3,500m2 building at Perth Markets to cater for current and future increases in demand.

Construction for the building began in February 2020 after the three tenants sought to capitalise on the growth in demand seen as more people seek to shop with their local grocer.

Shane Patching from SJ Fresh says they signed up to lease the space because their business had outgrown the warehouse space they were in and were unable to take on any new business.

“We had made the decision to expand our business in 2018. This was based on the fact that we were seeing strong and steady demand for our high-quality products,” said Shane.

“This proved to be the right decision as when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we were able to capitalise on a significant increase in demand. During the initial lock-down in March 2020, demand for fruit and vegetables went through the roof and although it has slowed somewhat, it seems people are opting to cook at home more often and preferring to shop with their local grocer.”

With an increase in demand, came several challenges. Specifically, the need to maintain produce quality. The new temperature controlled facility provides recessed loading docks to assist in the maintenance of produce freshness

The $8.4 million facility was constructed in 2020 and welcomed the new tenants at the end of the year. Perth Markets also has attained DA approval for a further two buildings on the same site and construction will begin once tenants have been secured.
