The Galati name is well known for their Spudshed supermarket chain. Their 15 stores across Western Australia (WA) connect the consumer with WA farmers and they pride themselves on growing and selling their own produce.

But there is much more to the family-run business and the Perth Markets site is central hub for a great deal of their operation. The Galati Group has two business that trade at the Perth Markets Site. Cream of the Crop and Summer Fruit Sales. Through these businesses, the family buy and sell fresh produce.

Galati Group CEO Frankie Galati was introduced to the Site when he was a teenager; helping his father Tony Galati at the Saturday Clearance Markets.

“From a young age I’ve been part of the family business, many of my childhood memories of my dad are of him in the farms leaving early and coming home late. On holidays or the weekend he would take us to work on the farm.

“At 19 years of age, I got my first hands-on experience in doing the actual trading in the Perth Markets Central Trading Area. I was looking after all our buying, making sure we had enough produce to meet demand. That was an eye opener into the world of economics. It happens front in front of you. Deals are being done. Trades are happening. The supply and demand curve is moving IN real time. It’s a really fast-paced, dynamic environment and it’s quite exciting.

“I feel very connected to the market. I like to be on site once a week to feel its pulse. It’s a very familiar place, almost like home.”

Being long-term tenants, the Galati family are well-known on Site. The family business has come a long way since starting out as a market garden in Spearwood in the 1960s and despite its vast growth, its business philosophy remains unchanged: to bring down the cost of a weekly shop and making healthy fresh produce affordable for the people of Perth.
