Perth Markets’ ‘Market City’ turns 30

News

This month, Perth Markets will celebrate the milestone of three decades being located at their Canning Vale ‘Market City’ site.

Newly appointed CEO, Rebecca Moore said 30 years is a monumental achievement being the longest running, and only wholesale supply market to the West Australian fruit and vegetable sector.

“The markets have existed in one form or another for 90 years, having previously been located in West Perth for 60 years before moving to the current site known as Market City in 1989.”

With over $638M in produce passing through the doors annually, Perth Markets sits on 51ha of land and has 170 diverse tenants including several wholesale and retail businesses.  It is also the home of the largest undercover weekend markets in WA which are open to the public.

Saturday is a wholesale fresh food market and Sunday, a community market with everything from delicious food, fruit and vegetables to bric-a-brac that sees over 6000 eager bargain hunters attend each weekend.

Perth Markets plays a critical role in the supply of fresh produce to West Australians in making a significant contribution to the State’s economy.   It also contributes to the local community, giving back to the industry and to the community via donations to both Rotary WA and Foodbank.

“If you go to any supermarket, green grocer, restaurant, café, or variety of food retail shops in WA today, you can guarantee the fresh produce you buy has been sourced via Perth Markets”, Ms Moore said.

“We are continually working with growers, wholesalers and retailers.  It is not just all about the wholesale buying floor, there is also modern cool chain storage onsite, transport and logistics facilities as well as wholesaling and retail business and community markets,” Ms Moore added.

With Metronet coming in 2030, there are plans to expand and develop the remaining 12 ha of undeveloped land to include 18 cool chain warehouses to support small business and growth of the food sector including exports as well as a future a mixed-use residential development onsite.

If you haven’t been to the weekend markets before, why not come along and see what all the fuss is about and bag yourself a bargain.
