About the wholesale markets
Perth Markets (the Markets) is Western Australia’s only wholesale fruit and vegetable market. The Markets contribute significantly to the horticultural industry as well as Western Australia’s economy, with more than 220,000 tonnes of produce traded through the Market annually.
Operating from a purpose-built Site on 51 hectares at Canning Vale, Perth Markets provides the critical link between growers, wholesalers, retailers and the fresh produce supply chain.
More than 13,000 individuals access the Market Site each week. The bulk of produce is traded through the Central Trading Area (CTA), which consists of 25 market wholesalers.
Wholesalers offer an extensive range of product variety, quality and price and have access to a large customer base with more than 760 registered buyers.
Market operations are complex. More than 100 businesses within the Site receive, store, trade and distribute highly perishable fresh fruit and vegetables in the most efficient manner available to meet the ever-increasing demand.
Wholesale markets are situated throughout the world and offer a structured trading environment where all sectors can meet and collectively trade. Within Australia there are five central wholesale markets, located in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane as well as Perth.
Centralised wholesale markets deliver an efficient logistics and marketing solution by providing extensive exposure to a large customer base in one location with access to warehousing and storage facilities.
The majority of Australia’s fresh produce is either traded or transhipped through Australia’s wholesale markets providing a critical link within the industry involving growers, wholesalers, retailers and associated industry groups.
Perth Markets is fundamental to Western Australia’s fresh produce industry. More than 70% of product traded through the Market comes from Western Australian growers.
The Canning Vale Site is approximately 16 kilometres south of the Perth CBD and only 20 kilometres from Perth Airport. The site offers convenient access to major arterial links including Roe Highway and the Kwinana Freeway, allowing easier inbound delivery from farm to market and outbound delivery locally, interstate or overseas.
Approximately 75,000 square metres of existing warehouse space provides for the integration of supply chain logistics within the Market. There is approximately 12 hectares of vacant land still to be developed providing the opportunity to accommodate the specialised requirements of Site users. This is evident with the recently completed 3500m2 cold chain warehouse for three existing Tenants due to the ongoing growth of their respective business operations.
